Reflecting on your growth as a writer

To begin class today, I would like you to reflect on your writing (and your writing experiences) from the entire quarter. How would you desribe your experience as writer in this course? What have you learned about writing, rhetoric, revision, persuasiveness, or any other aspect of writing that seems significant to you?

As you conclude this quarter, I also want you to reflect on your strengths as a writer. What are these? In what kind of tasks have you succeeded? Conversely, what issues do you think you still struggle with as a writer? As you look ahead to WRIT 1133, what are your goals as a writer? What do you hope to learn next quarter?

  1. Writing in this class has been a growing experience. Coming out of high school, I had done limited research papers and plenty of AP style essays, however, I never really experienced too much outside of that realm. Beginning the course with a narrative piece was helpful to break away from the norm. As far as persuasion and rhetoric, I have learned and can now utilize tools such as ethos and logos. The new understanding of these ideas has lead to improvement in my writing.
I have pretty much stayed even on grades and achievement on each assignment so I cannot truly say in what area I have excelled. Nonetheless, my abilities of persuasion have improved because I have slowed down and now take a longer look at what I am trying to convey. In regards to next quarter in WRIT 1133, I plan to continue this slower approach to writing. I need to understand what I am saying in order for my audience to understand my writing. All I can hope for is to continue to improve my writing and learn how to write for different occasions and audiences.

  2. I feel like I had a good experience as a writer this quarter. I feel like I was able to write about things that I was interested but was also able to follow the assignment that I was supposed to write on. I learned a lot about rhetoric and I feel like I am very knowledgeable in that area after this class. Now I understand what rhetoric is and I feel like I can rhetorically analyze a piece of writing pretty well. I also feel like I learned a lot about how revisions are an important part of becoming a good writer because I learned from all my revisions and know more about writing than before I revised my papers.
I feel like as a writer, I can write a very persuasive piece of writing but also analyze a particular persuasive piece to see how persuasive it actually is. I feel like I succeeded in writing about a personal experience of mine and persuading the reader that it is an important part of my life. Some struggles I think I still have as a writer is elaborating my full views on paper and not assuming that the reader will understand fully what I am trying to say. My goal for next quarter is to work on that particularly but also to keep becoming a better writer. I hope to learn more about different writing techniques that I can use in life to understand other writers and to make my writing better.

  3. Well first thing, I think I'm a better writer when I write rhetorically rather than analytically. I believe that I have become a more persuasive writer in this 10 week course and that the definitions of rhetorical terms have helped shaped my goals as a writer.
Now that the quarter is wrapping up, I can say that I really enjoyed and looked forward to this class. I believe that I am solid as an analytical writer, I guess it is just difficult to analyze a rhetorical piece for me. Going into 1133, I'm maintaining an open mind to the subject matter and I hope to further my overall skills as a writer.

  4. I would describe my experience in this class as one of enlightenment perhaps. The main thing that I'm taking away form this class is all those ideas about rhetoric. I never relized before, or thought about for that matter, why some peices of writing speak to me and why others don't. Why do I read some articles in the newspaper and end up strongly agreeing with the point of the author and then read others and not agree at all. I think that understand ethos, pathos, common places, and all of those other things we analised during the semester is what I will take with me from this class and incorporate into any writing I do after this class.
I would say that my strenths as a writer are that I have good pathos. I feel like I do a good job of getting to people emmotions when I am trying to be persuasive in a piece. I still struggle with using facts to back up points. I resort to my own thoughts as evidence for any claim that I make far to frequently. I need to start making a better effort at researching and finding information to support my points. Next quarter I would like to improve my use of factual information in peices and also work on explaining things more clearly. I feel that too frequently I see comments on my papers that say that I was not clear.

  5. At the beginning of the quarter I was very used to the academic writing that was taught in high school. I was not used to the creative side of writing that is more acceptable here. My experience in this class was one of trial, testing out the different ways that I was able to express myself. I have learned the different ways to enhance my ethos, as well as pathos to strengthen my argument. Through this class I have also come to know that writing something good takes time, and that includes a lot of revisions and changes. By the end of this quarter I feel as if I have been able to break out of the academic writing more, and am able to be more creative. I think that I am getting better at this, but still need to focus on how I organize my ideas, as well as how I get readers involved and excited when reading what I write. In WRIT 1133 I hope to continue to work on my creativity and expressiveness, while being persuasive. I hope to enhance more of my writing skills, and try to be the best writer I can be.

  6. I would describe this course as being very positive for my writing ability overall. I feel I have gained a greater understanding of rhetoric as well as how to revise my work over the course of this class. Before this class I was well-rounded but I now have a better understanding of how to create an ethos as well as how to use pathos and logos in order to present a persuasive and informative document. I feel my strengths are using these tools as a writer in presenting and explaining various topics. As for what I need to improve on, I still think I need to do a better job of explaining where information is coming from, in part with citations, in order to be even more credible with the reader. In WRIT 1133 I hope to achieve this.

  7. I think that my writing has progressed a lot during this quarter. I had not worked much with persuasive writing in the past, so this course has done a great deal in teaching me how to use rhetorical strategies when writing a paper. I think that revising old assignments that I had already turned in helped me as well. Usually when I turn things in, I tend to forget about them. By revising them later on in the quarter, I saw things that I had missed before and was able to improve upon them using what I had learned.I think that my strengths as a writer fell more into the narrative assignment than the other assignments. I do think that I have improved with assignments such as the blog and the position paper, although this is something that I still need to work on. I hope that next quarter I get the opportunity to improve upon this.

  8. In this writing class I learned a lot. There were a variety of different tasks and writing aspects that we needed to accomplish. The variety of the ways of writing, such as being persuasive, writing a narrative, and a rhetorical analysis, allowed me to learn to curve my writing for a specific audience. The three assignments were very different, which widened my knowledge and ability to write. It was interesting and very helpful to write in other ways than just a normal analysis essay. Writing takes on many different voices and characteristics. During this quarter, I feel that I have been exposed to many of these characteristics, which in turn gives me a stronger background for incorporating a variety of things in my writing, making it stronger. Because of this, my writing technique has improved. I feel I am no longer limited to one specific type of writing. The assignment that really helped with this was the vivid narrative. It was something so different to what I had normally done. It really helped me open my mind to new writing, and once I embraced that I was free to go. My voice was really found during this quarter, especially with that piece of writing. As I go into WRIT 1133, I need to make sure that I fully expand my thoughts and ideas so that the audience will not have to question my writing. Besides that, I hope that next quarter will just keep helping me improve my writing and gives me more techniques to use in my future.

  9. At the beginning of the course, I set a whole host of objectives to attain by the end of the quarter, indicating that I would like to strengthen my abilities to write persuasively and materialize my ideas on paper, and to gain a better grasp of the process of writing. That is, at the beginning of the quarter I wanted to learn how to better utilize the writing process, and know better where to begin when given a writing assignment. I feel as though there has been a tremendous amount of growth since day one of class, but more importantly, I learned that regardless of any inherent skills as a writer, I must always push myself to continue to improve.

In recent years, I have developed the ability to present clear and focused ideas in efforts of writing a persuasive argument, in addition to simply sounding eloquent. Moving forward, however, I often struggle in getting started in the process, as well as transitioning between ideas and structuring my writing to present a clear and organized argument. Next quarter, I hope to grow in my ability to write analytically and critically, and materialize research and ideas into a well-thought-out argument.

  10. This course definitely did its job in the sense that I was put outside of my comfort zone as a writer. I have never done any informal, creative, or reflective writing before this class. I also have never blogged before. Because I have no experience in a lot of the writing we did in this class, I learned the basics of those types of writing, as well as my strengths and weaknesses with those types of writing.
In general, my strengths as a writer are organization and support. I usually do these aspects of writing extremely well. This is because I spend almost as much time outlining and researching (quote finding) as I do on the writing of the paper itself.
I think the most I learned from this class was from the rhetoric aspect. I have never learned any rhetoric before and learning how to truly learn how to read a piece and pick it apart has completely changed the way I read in general.
Across the board in writing types, my weakness is analysis. I always feel as if I do not go into the level of analysis that is expected when writing; I feel like I usually just show the facts, but do not explain them enough. More specifically, when I write informally, I usually do not put enough feeling or personality to the paper because I am still used to just formal essay writing. The personal narrative was a challenge for me because it was the farthest from my comfort zone in writing style.
Next quarter I hope to just continuing to improve upon my strengths and weaknesses as a writer. I have never been a strong writer so I am basically fine with working on any aspect of my writing.

  11. The ten weeks in this class flew by quickly, at first I was worried about the essays that we had to write, and how I was going to be able to write five pages about rhetoric. But the posts that we did prior to the assignments really helped out in terms of providing some basic understanding, but also expanding ideas and examples. Before I often find myself stuck on a writing assignment, but given the different rhetoric approaches, a wide range of ideas opened up to provide more analysis, and approaches. I getting better at providing details to make the scene more active, but as I go into 1133 I want to continue the path I’m on now, learning to write more persuasively, and the different approaches to do so.

  12. As we began this quarter, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I wasn’t quite sure how hard or easy it might be or how the class would be taught. From writing different types of pieces in this class I think my experience was a good one. I was able to learn how to write persuasive pieces dealing with my ethos and the ethos of others. I was able to get different perspectives one my pieces from different students allowing me to be a better writer and work around what I am used to. This course also help me learned more of how to write persuasive writing which will help me in other classes to come and actually understand what rhetoric means. All the different types of things we did in this class will help me revise my own work by asking some of the questions that were given to us.
Ending this class, I believe that the strength I gain as a writer is learning who my target audience is and how is actually learning the different techniques in persuading a reader. Also, I think I gained is reading different topics that I was not used to and understanding what is written. The tasks I think I succeeded at were taking my time in writing and not thinking a first draft is my final draft.
Finally, what I think I am still struggling is explaining all of my thought and organizing them in a way that interests my readers. And what I think I look for in the next writing class is understanding how I can use what I learn now and how I can tie it in with research and finding an interest in what I am writing.

  13. From the whole quarter’s study of this class, I was taught in a very formal way about how to write a persuasive and attractive paper. Through reading those rhetoric books and articles written by the columnists on New York times, I both know the definition of rhetoric writing on theory and credibility writing which is used in the real life. The first one teaches me what is rhetoric and the second one let me know how to use it. By revising my paper after others’ suggestion and professor’s comments, now I know how to find the weak place by myself.

I think the strength for me as a writer is that I have totally different experience than others’, which can make my articles more special. Although probably the Chinese writing style will make my paper weird or hard to understand, on the other hand, it means that my article is more unique. What confused me a lot in writing is how to describe one thing less messy but more detailed. I think this maybe because of the language problem that I cannot use a simple way to constitute one sentence. Another reason is that I don’t know how to make the points clearly and cut those unrelated nonsense.

The section I choose for next quarter’s WRIT 1133 is about research. This will be another formal study to let me know how to make a research and how to write the conclusion of one research. As I want to be businessman of my career, I think this will help me a lot.

  14. This writing course has been very beneficial in improving my writing skills. As a person who doesn’t usually enjoy writing, I felt like this quarter not only provided opportunities for me to enjoy writing, but also helped me to become a better writer. I have always struggled with writing in a passice voice and not being persuasive enough, but this class greatly improved upon those skills by providing more engaging assignments that made me want to improve my persuasiveness to make a point. This course also helped me with my revising skills and lack thereof by forcing me to look at my papers multiple times before turning them in each time.
The kind of writing that I have most enjoyed in life, and feel I do best in, is creative writing. I really enjoyed the first assignment and the last assignment because they were both more creative with less analysis and I feel I did a better job on those two assignments. I still feel like I need to work on my analyzing skills and putting that analysis into a cohesive essay that is well written and organized. Next quarter I plan to work on my analysis skills and I am also very excited to focus on research because that is something I have never spent a great deal on and feel it is a very beneficial skill on writing.

  15. Throughout this quarter I have learned how to both analyze others rhetorical techniques and as well as how to utilize these techniques in my own writing. Before this coarse, I had analyzed others writing but not in the sense of their rhetorical techniques. In this coarse, I moved from creating a somewhat unstructured personal narrative, to a structured analysis of a professional writer, to creating my own blog post where I was able to combine my own thoughts and ideas with what I learned about the rhetorical techniques of persuasion. I learned that as a reader, I am most impressed or persuaded when the author targets ethos as well as pathos. Of coarse the other techniques are important, but when a writer can target my emotions and make me respect him/her, I feel that I can really connect with them and are most likely to listen to what they have to say. Once I learned this, I found that in my own writing it is useful for me to target these same techniques. I also learned that during revision, it is often necessary to change around the structure of your writing and play with the order of things to make it more logical or engaging.
As I mentioned above, I think one of my strengths as a writer is engaging the readers on an emotional level but also speaking to them on a personal level that they can relate to. This was different for each of my pieces of writing this quarter because I was speaking to a different audience. For example, in my blog post I strove to make this issue real for my student readers. I wanted them to be shocked by the racist jokes, possibly laugh at my cursing, and then realize the significance of this issue in realizing that it surrounds all of us. As I look ahead I want to continue to work on my revision process. Often, I find it difficult to revisit my writing after I feel that I had finalized it but in the future I hope to continue work on this important skill.
